Description

Fiberhome EX8A overview

EX8A is an 8-port 10G EPON card, which can be used in the chassis of Fiberhome brand OLT AN6000-7AN6000-15AN6000-17, and AN6000-2. 10G EPON is a point-to-multipoint passive optical network access technology standardized in IEEE 802.3av, which evolved from the EPON standard IEEE 802.3ah. There are two key points in the IEEE 802.3av standard: the uplink and downlink bandwidths specified in IEEE 802.3ah are raised up to 10 Gbit/s; 10G EPON has good compatibility so that 10G EPON ONUs can coexist with EPON ONUs in an ODN. In this way, the operator’s investment is protected.

Product Features

  • High-Density Access: Offers 8 ports for 10G EPON (IEEE 802.3av) services, supporting high subscriber density.
  • Smooth Evolution: Allows easy migration and coexistence with existing EPON networks, supporting both 1G and 10G PON services within the same subrack.
  • Broad ONU Support: Compatible with various ONU types, including SFU, MDU, and MTU.
  • Advanced QoS & Management: Provides granular rate control, broadcast suppression, and supports Intelligent QoS (iQoS) for efficient service delivery.
  • High Reliability: Implements Type B/C protection for PON and supports network-side reliability protocols like MSTP and ERPS for sub-50ms recovery.
  • Time & Clock Sync: Ensures precise time synchronization with support for IEEE 1588V2 and SyncE.

Application Scenarios

1. Urban 10G EPON Upgrade in Spain

A Spanish telecom integrated FiberHome EX8A Boards into AN6000-17 OLTs for Madrid’s dense residential and business districts. The 8-port 10G EPON card supported symmetric 10Gbps speeds, delivering ultra-broadband, 8K IPTV, and low-latency cloud services to 1,024 subscribers per board (1:128 splitting ratio). Its compatibility with legacy EPON ONUs protected existing investments, while 20km transmission via PR30/XFP modules covered urban extensions. 1588v2 synchronization ensured high-quality video calls, and Type B/C PON protection (≤50ms switching) minimized downtime—aligning with the operator’s F5G network upgrade strategy.

2. Mixed-Service Convergence in Brazil

A Brazilian ISP deployed EX8A Boards in AN6000-07 OLTs for São Paulo’s suburban mixed-use areas. The card’s asymmetric (1.25Gbps uplink/10Gbps downlink) and symmetric modes flexibly served residential broadband and enterprise cloud needs. With 64 kbit/s DBA granularity, it optimized bandwidth allocation for diverse traffic, while IGMP snooping supported multicast IPTV services. Hot-swappable design and batch ONU configuration simplified maintenance, and FEC function enhanced transmission reliability. This cost-effective solution enabled smooth migration from 1G EPON to 10G EPON without replacing ODN infrastructure.

Throughput  In the 10G/1G asymmetric access mode, if 10G/1G EPON ONUs are connected only, the downlink throughput is no less than 8.3 Gbit/s, and the uplink throughput is no less than 900 Mbit/s.
In the 10G/10G symmetric access mode, if 10G/10G EPON ONUs are connected only, the downlink throughput is no less than 8.3 Gbit/s, and the uplink throughput is no less than 8 Gbit/s.
Transmission delay When the split ratio is 1:32, the uplink average transmission delay (when the traffic is no more than 90% of the PON port throughput) is less than 1.5 ms.
The downlink average transmission delay (when the traffic is no more than 90% of the PON port throughput) is less than 1 ms.
